Established in 1976, BSHF is an independent housing research organisation that promotes sustainable development and innovation in housing through collaborative research and knowledge transfer. It is financially independent, deriving its income from the land, property and investments that it owns and was one of the founder members of CECODHAS. BSHF works both in the UK and internationally to identify innovative housing solutions and to foster the exchange of information and good practice and is committed to promoting housing policy and practice that is people-centred and environmentally responsible. It carries out a range of activities including undertaking and commissioning research, organising and sponsoring an international awards scheme for innovative housing solutions and facilitating knowledge transfer through a range of activities including international study visits, exchange workshops and the production of CDs, videos and printed materials relating to examples of proven housing innovation. It also has a staff team working solely on UK housing policy and practice, focussing these activities on a consultation held annually in St George’s House, Windsor Castle. It is the only NGO working in housing in the UK that has been accorded Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations (NIFHA) is the ‘umbrella’ organisation representing, supporting and promoting the activities of the registered and many of the non-registered Housing Associations in Northern Ireland. Its members are independent, voluntary, not-for-profit organisations dedicated to helping people obtain decent affordable accommodation which meets their needs. NIFHA's members provide over 30,000 units of accommodation - a quarter all social rented housing in Northern Ireland. Registered housing association are in part funded by government with the rest coming from private finance arranged separately by the association. The revenue costs (management, maintenance and loan repayments) are met from the rental income. The remaining non-registered associations have more freedom to act but much less access to public money. Furthermore, Co-ownership Housing, enables low-income applicants to partly buy and partly rent suitable homes, with the right to become full owners later. Since its inception it has help over 19,000 households purchase their home.
