Young architects invited to design the homes of the future

Student competitions to deliver solutions for Europe's ageing population and to promote the cooperative housng model

Amsterdam/Milan, 2 November 2015 | Social

Architecture students from across Europe have the opportunity to see their designs for accessible housing for older people and for those promoting the cooperative concept take a step closer to reality thanks to two competitions.

EFL Design Competition of Accessible Housing

The European Federation for Living (EFL) is encouraging final year undergraduate and postgraduate architecture students to enter its competition to design homes of the future for an ever increasing elderly population across Europe. By 2060 over half of those living in the European Union will be retirement age. Entrants are encouraged to work with other students studying complementary subjects such as engineering to create multidisciplinary teams.

The Federation created the competition, which could see the winning design built or utilised in part, to generate new ideas around how innovative housing can meet the needs of an increasingly ageing and disabled population. The competition aims to anticipate future need and provide a vision that is ahead of government legislation.

Joost Nieuwenhuijzen, Director at EFL, said: “We need to start thinking differently to ensure we can meet the needs of an ageing population in the future. We’ve launched this competition to allow the brightest talent to work through this problem and come up with creative, bold new innovations in housing designs for older people.”

Five monetary prizes and a trip to Helsinki in Spring 2016 will be awarded to the top five entries. The winner(s) will walk away with €5000, the runner up with €3000, third place with €1000 and the fourth and fifth prizes will be worth €500 each.

Closing date: 15 January 2016

'AAA Architetti Cercasi, an award for young architects/planners

The award was launched in 2008 by Federabitazione, one of the main federations of housing cooperatives in Italy and member of Housing Europe, and aims at discovering young talents and disseminating the cooperative housng model.

It represents an opportunity to exchange on technical as well as cultural aspects linked with cooperative and social housing, as well as the broader role of cities, quality of living and architecture.

While previous editions were promoted at the regional level upon the initiative of Federazione Lombardia, the Award in 2015 will for the first time cover 4 regions and is organized by Federabitazione (Confcooperative) at national level. This edition will focus on the themes of urban regeneration, requalification of existing buildings, re-discovering metropolitan areas, and 'productive' housing - a vision of working in the residential sector producing jobs, welfare and services with a high social impact.
