Disabilities & housing

Disabled people represent 10% of the European population, with one European family in four having a disabled family member.

If they are to actively participate in economic, social and cultural life, it is essential that they be provided with accessible accommodation and support services to allow them to remain independent within their own homes and maximize their potential.

Housing associations and cooperatives are developing innovative ways to break down existing barriers and seek to empower  residents with disabilities by giving them a greater say in the design of their own homes. Solultions range from the removal of physical barriers to the provision of integrated services (often in partnership with other services providers) for those who require them, and implementation of initiatives such as the Design for All principles.
