Right to housing
The right to adequate housing is a universal right, is recognized at the international level and in more than one hundred national constitutions throughout the world. Furthermore, with the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon, the Charter of fundamental rights including the right to housing assistance is nowpart of the legal basis for EU policies.
The 2010 Joint report on social Protection and Social Inclusion states that "access to good quality and affordable housing is a fundamental need and right, and a key factor determining people social situation." Nevertheless, it is estimated that nowadays about 3 million people in Europe do not have access to decent housing.
CECODHAS HOUSING EUROPE believes that the right to decent and affordable housing should not be a hypothetic right, but implemented for all. To this goal, the right to housing should be integrated as a pillar of social inclusion policies, to help Member States implement this basic right by sharing experiences.
