If we have to describe the Social Housing Film Festival with one word, that would be celebration. A global celebration of the long tradition of decent, affordable housing that provides opportunities, breaks stereotypes and myths, and especially nowadays, creates a feeling of stability and safety.
Those of you who have been following the world of housing closely, would immediately think of another event that brings the same ideas together - the International Social Housing Festival (ISHF). And you would be right.
Festival with a history
The Festival was inaugurated in Amsterdam in 2017, travelled to Lyon in 2019 and it was supposed to happen for a third time in June 2021 in Helsinki.
We believe that only art, the unique moment of reflection after watching a movie and a discussion with the director, the main protagonists and key figures in housing could re-create the spirit of ISHF in time of a global pandemic. Luckily, all that can happen online.
What is more - the film festival will provide a platform for the community to meet before housing providers, policymakers, tenants and academics see each other again during the next edition of ISHF in Finland in 2022. To make the liaison with past and future events, Helsinki will meet its predecessors in Lyon and the next organisers of ISHF 2023 from Barcelona.
So, what can you expect?
Thought-provoking films in different kind of genres that all have two things in common - the power of public, cooperative or social housing to improve people’s lives and a strong human element.
The event will also feature a first look at some of the pieces from BBC StoryWorks' upcoming film series about social and affordable housing produced for Housing Europe's network. For more information about how you can be involved, please contact Siena Morrell, Researcher, BBC Global News.
Life in public, cooperative and social housing is full of human stories we can relate to, it often has surprising revelations and always offers something new to learn.
