It is the neighbourhoods where people derive their identity from. This is where our housing providers interact with their residents, social services, the local economy and local authorities.
Public, Cooperative and Social Housing are leading the Just Energy Transition
Social housing promotes the decarbonisation of the energy system and the built environment by investing in renewable energy - through self-consumption mechanisms and the setting up of energy cooperatives.
Social housing already drives renovation efforts. Between 2001 and 2017 housing providers have replaced three-quarters of oil-based heating systems with district heating or other more sustainable energy sources.
Social housing takes a neighbourhood approach to problem-solving, in particular by focusing on district-level Co2 emissions and the promotion of net-zero emission neighbourhoods.
The much-awaited Renovation Wave Strategy of the European Commission has proved that the global health pandemic can be an opportunity to build back a green, fair society where everybody can fulfill their full potential.
The Affordable Housing Initiative (AHI) that will pilot 100 lighthouse renovation districts focuses on creating quality, liveable, affordable homes for people and will mobilise cross-sectoral project partnerships.
