The Danish EU Presidency convened a High-Level Conference on Housing in Copenhagen. The event underlined that the housing crisis is not an abstract policy debate but a daily reality for low- and middle-income households across Europe.
Dan Jørgensen, EU Commissioner for Energy and Housing, stressed that Europe can change its housing story, drawing on inspiration from successful regeneration projects. Thomas Kattnig, from the European Economic and Social Committee, highlighted the need to strengthen public and limited-profit housing sectors, while Irene Tinagli, MEP and Chair of the HOUS committee, underlined speculation and short-term rentals as key drivers of the crisis, calling for greater investment in social and public housing. Representing Housing Europe’s Board, Bent Madsen reiterated that EU financial support must grow, and that it should be reinvested in housing rather than fuelling speculation. Finally, Matthew Baldwin, from the European Commission’s Housing Task Force, emphasised the need for both innovative and proven approaches to shape a European housing plan.
Alongside these discussions, Alice Pittini, our Research Director, presented on behalf of the Housing Europe Observatory a teaser of the upcoming State of Housing in Europe 2025, offering fresh evidence to guide policymakers.
This echoes the position of Housing Europe President Marco Corradi, that the housing crisis is not an abstract issue but a lived reality for households across Europe. Tackling it requires long-term planning and a needs-based approach, with dedicated support for social, cooperative and public housing providers who are already showing they can deliver.
