Brussels, 9 April 2019 | Published in Urban, Economy, Social

The Housing Solutions Platform, including Housing Europe, proposes to publish a collection of some of the most innovative and daring examples of housing solutions for the locked out in Europe.

Widespread increasing housing prices and budget cuts on social spending over the last few years have contributed to an increasing number of people being “locked out” of the housing market i.e. being unable to access adequate quality affordable housing and therefore being excluded from the housing market or inadequately housed.

We believe that the publication will encourage different stakeholders to become more innovative in the provision of affordable housing solutions and to fill the gaps in existing systems.

The publication will cover a wide scope of solutions in different parts of the housing system e.g. innovative construction, social housing, mobilisation of private rental sector, activating vacant stock, community-led housing, innovative legal and financing mechanisms, cross-sectoral cooperation, emergence of new actors, eviction prevention, architectural and sociological projects, daring land policies, etc. The publication will also include examples of projects which have failed, so as to focus on the learning take-away.

The 50 solutions will be proposed by experts including academics, architects, urban planners, civil servants, social workers, social housing providers, and other profiles. They will present what they think to be the most important innovative housing solutions. The project is financed by the King Baudouin Foundation and the Y-Foundation.
