In her State of the Union address on 16 September 2020, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen presented her vision for a Europe that emerges stronger from the pandemic and leads the way towards recovery.

The President also highlighted that 37% of the Next Generation EU package will be spent on the objectives of the EU Green Deal and a priority will be given to lighthouse projects with the biggest impact, such as home renovation so that they are less expensive, more circular and digital.

But how can EU and national policymakers make sure that the post-COVID resilience instrument leaves no one behind? Bent Madsen, President of Housing Europe responds with proposals on the role to be played by the sector. He stressed that Eurostat has released a study in May to show that  8,1% of the households in Europe have not been able to pay their rent or mortgage in the past 3 months; 1 out of 5 unemployed people fear losing their home and 6% of the respondents say they might need to leave their homes in 6 months.
